French Art Deco Pottery: Gilbert Metenier attrib. Took over his workshop in 1920 and was responsible for making the.

Méténier one of France's leading art stoneware workshops in the 1920s and 1930s. Gilbert operated the workshop from 1920 until 1940, at which time he abandoned the workshop and destroyed all of its molds to prevent them from falling into the hands of the German occupiers. He moved south to Saint Raphaël, but all trace was lost of him after that. Méténier's war-shortened career, he left an indelible mark on 20th century French art pottery.

This pair of vases are very much in the style of Gilbert Méténier, even though his signature can not be found on the bottom (as was often the case with his work). These vases are in a sleek, classical form, tapering to a narrow mouth and likely date to the 1920s or 1930s. The The glaze treatment is dominated by a soft, mottled green with brown highlights. The condition of these vases piece is very good, with no observed defects.

The dimensions of these elegant vases are 5 inches high, about 3 inches wide across the shoulders, and narrowing to a little more than 1 inch across the mouth. Please see the photos for more details on condition and to fully appreciate the glaze treatment.

The bulk of my collection is Danish stoneware from the 1920s into the 1970s. The bulk of my Danish collection consists of Arne Bang, Saxbo, Jais Nielsen, Nils Thorsson, Erik Hjorth, and Ejvind Nielsen. I have done extensive research on these and other artists and workshops and would be happy to share that with interested buyers. I also have substantial collections of American, French, Belgian and other 20th century northern European art pottery. The bulk of my French/Belgian collection consists of Pierrefonds, Denbac, Charles and Pierre Greber, and Roger Guerin, with some pieces from other workshops, including Gilbert Metenier and Alphones Cytere.

Over the coming months I will be listing a wide range of pieces from my collection.
